IOC's Efforts to Minimize Olympics' Carbon Footprint

The Olympic Games bring together athletes and spectators from across the globe, showcasing human potential, resilience, and a sense of unity unparalleled by other sporting events. To ensure the Games are held in the most efficient and responsible manner, the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s Olympic Agenda mandates that hosts create a lasting positive impact on the host location while minimizing environmental harm. Central to this goal is the reduction of the carbon footprint associated with the Olympics.

To assist Olympic organizers in understanding and reducing their carbon emissions, the IOC has developed the "Olympic Games Carbon Footprint Methodology." First released in December 2018 and updated in December 2024, this methodology provides a structured and transparent approach to measure carbon emissions and identify opportunities for impact reduction. It serves as a comprehensive guide, covering all aspects of the Olympic event cycle, from infrastructure construction and operation to transportation and spectator activities.

By implementing this methodology, the IOC aims to promote sustainable practices in Olympic hosting. It not only helps hosts make informed decisions to cut down on emissions but also sets a precedent for large - scale international events. The continuous refinement of the methodology reflects the IOC's commitment to staying at the forefront of environmental stewardship, ensuring that the Olympic Games not only inspire on the field of play but also contribute positively to the global fight against climate change.
